I already quoted aegyo in the post about ulzzang, but you knowwhat that is exactly? Aegyo (애교) is a cute display of affection often expressed through a cute voice, facil expression and gestures. It is usually expected that male and female korean idols behave this way, but everyday people to behave in such a way, is commonly used as an expression of affection to friends.
The word can be translated as cuteness in English and can be compared to the Japanese "kawaii".
Aegyo plays a huge role in South Korean popular culture, especially in K-Pop girl groups (mainly in groups with cute concept) since the first successful female K-Pop group S.E.S in 1997, this style has grown in popularity since then.
And in boy groups, the maknae (youngest member of a group) always does aegyo. For some performers, aegyo is just an extension of their own normal behavior. (Photo: Choa from AOA and HimChan from B.A.P).
A version of aegyo may become tradition, such as when idols perform the Gwiyomi song. The Gwiyomi Song, or Kwiyomi Song (귀요미 송), is a K-pop single by South Korean singer Hari and was released on February 2013. It was inspired by a gesture from South Korean rapper Jung Ilhoon of K-Pop boy group BtoB.
The gesture is called 'Gwiyomi Player', that was popularized by South Korean variety show Weekly Idol through a segment called "The Aegyo Battle" (Battle of Cuteness) following Ilhoon's guest appearance on the show in October 2012. You can see here:
The song went on to be a viral success and an Internet meme after Korean Media outlet Sports Seoul uploaded a clip of Hari performing the gestures and singing the song:
This video has since inspired many ulzzangs (or not) to upload their own versions in the internet. Here are some versions that i've asked for some youtubers:
